Guest and User Policies

Authorized Access

The use of the Campus Recreation Center (CRC) and related programs is intended for UMass Lowell (UML) students, faculty, staff. The CRC, Campus Recreation Complex, and Riverview Suites Fitness Center are card-access controlled facilities. Only authorized users, guests of authorized users, and approved groups are allowed to utilize our facilities and they must provide a valid UML identification (ID).

All full-time UMass Lowell students, faculty, staff, adjunct faculty, or part-time and continuing-ed students who are in a matriculated into a program have access to the CRC at no additional charge.

Alumni and immediate family members 18+ of current faculty/staff/students/alumni who live in the same house have the ability to purchase a membership to the CRC. Visit our member services page for more information on membership options, rates, and amenities.

False representation of identification or sharing your ID is strictly prohibited.

  • Students caught sharing their ID will be referred to the UMass Lowell Student Conduct Office
  • The Student's ID which was misused will have their access temporarily suspended to our recreational facilities pending the conclusion of the UMass Lowell Conduct process with the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities.
  • Campus Recreation reserves the right to revoke the membership of a paid CRC member (non-student); membership fees will not be refunded if a membership is revoked for sharing your CRC ID.

Equipment Checkout

  • Equipment can be checked out for free and returned from the CRC Welcome Desk or Riverview Fitness Center (RFC) desk with a valid UML UCARD or CRC Membership card using our card scan system
  • Items lost, stolen, or broken may be subject to a replacement fee

Lockers and Personal Property

  • A majority of our lockers are day use only; long term locker rental options are available on a limited basis at the CRC. Inquire at CRC on current availability
  • A majority of our lockers are equipped with built-in mechanical locks; members can bring in locks for lockers that do not have built-in locks. We encourage patrons not to bring in valuables and lock up all personal items in a locker securely.
  • Campus Recreation is not responsible for any personal items that are lost or stolen.
  • If items are left overnight inside a daily use locker, personal belongings will be removed and logged and placed into our lost and found.

Lost and Found

  • We log items daily and store in our equipment center for two weeks (after which items will be donated to goodwill).
  • Valuable items (wallets, money, credit cards, cell phones, ID's etc.) will be turned over to UMass Lowell Campus Police immediately.

Parking

Eligible Memberships have access to the CRC Parking Lot and East Campus Parking Garage and will be provided a parking hangtag to display in the rearview mirror of their vehicle. Purchasing a membership eligible for parking does not guarantee a parking spot, just the access to park in the designated lots when available. There are instances where the lots will be closed for University events or programs.

Memberships currently eligible CRC parking privileges include:

  • Alumni members
  • Immediate family members 18+ of alumni / students/faculty/staff
  • Master's members
  • Non-UML college student semester break members
  • Middlesex Community College (MCC) faculty/staff and their spouses via UML Affiliate Membership

Memberships not eligible for CRC parking privileges include:

  • UML-Affiliate Members (Aramark Employees, Global Spectrum Employees, 110 Canal St. Employees, LIRA members, and Draper Employees).
  • MCC Student Memberships
  • UML Part-Time and Continuing Education Memberships

Inclement Weather

If the university is delayed or closed due to inclement weather, such as snowstorms, visit the the  for any alerts from the university regarding changes to operating hours.

Guests guest

A member (host) can bring up to two guests per day into the CRC. The fee for student guests is $10/guest and the fee for all faculty/staff/CRC member guests is $20/guest. Guests must present a valid picture ID showing they are 18+ to be able to sign liability forms and enter the facility.

  • We will keep the host and guest(s) ID's at our desk until they exit facility
  • The host must accompany their guest(s) at all times
  • A host takes full responsibility for their guest(s) actions and are also responsible for conveying our facility policies to their guest(s)
  • When the host exits the facility, the guest must also leave
  • Guest can re-enter facility same day with their host and copy of guest fee receipt
  • Guest fees can be paid with credit card (no checks).
  • Guests may not check out equipment

Alumni Day Pass

UMass Lowell alumni are eligible to purchase a day pass to the Campus Recreation Center (CRC) for $20/day. Credit card payments only; we do not accept check for day passes and the CRC does not accept cash for any service or program.

  • Alumni who purchase a day pass can reenter the facility on the same day at no additional charge if they show receipt of payment. 
  • To be eligible to checkout equipment such as towels, basketballs, etc., alumni must provide a valid ID to keep at the welcome desk until the equipment is returned.
  • Parking is not included with the alumni day pass; we recommend parking on city metered spots on Hall, Cabot, Perkins, or Suffolk Street.

Fitness Center Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)

  • Participants should use extreme caution with any of the fitness equipment to avoid potential injuries to themselves or others. Please see one of our Fitness Attendants to learn how to properly use a piece of equipment.
  • All participants performing free weight exercises are encouraged to use a spotter. If needed, a fitness center attendant may be available for assistance.
  • All lifts using the Olympic barbells must be done in designated areas or inside the power racks/Olympic benches.
  • Proper exercise attire is required at all times: Closed-toe athletic shoes, upper-body garments and garments which discreetly cover the lower body.
  • Please use a clean towel to wipe down the exercise equipment after each use. We recommend that you wipe down equipment before each use as well.
  • All equipment must be returned to its appropriate storage location after use; all equipment must remain in the Fitness Center.
  • Participants must use weight collars when using barbells and weight plates (except on Smith machines).
  • Food, gum, alcohol and drugs are prohibited. Water and sports drinks in closed containers are allowed.
  • Large bags are not allowed to be left out on the fitness center floor where they can cause a tripping hazard. Approved locations include in front of the power racks or inside the footprint of Olympic benches. Our staff reserve the right to ask patrons to move to safe location or inside a locker. 
  • We recommend locking all valuables in the locker rooms (or hallway lockers in CRC). Campus Recreation is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
  • We recommend not bringing any valuables and locking up items inside lockers.
  • Windows must remain closed at all times; it is important to maintain the appropriate temperature and humidity. Exceptions can be made if there are issues with the HVAC system.
  • Intentionally dropping or throwing weights is prohibited (except for bumper plates inside designated power racks).
  • We do not allow outside fitness equipment/accessories in our facility that we deem inappropriate or unsafe.
  • Chalk is allowed when using Olympic bars in our fitness centers but patrons must clean up after each use.

Our Fitness Center SOPs are created with these basic principles in mind:

  • Safety of our patrons is #1
  • The CRC and RFC fitness centers should be an inviting and non-intimidating environment so exercisers from all fitness levels feel comfortable and welcomed
  • Equipment or exercises that damage our facilities/equipment shall be prohibited
  • Actions that inconvenience other patrons will be prohibited

CRC Gymnasium SOP

  • Dunking is permitted but hanging on rims and nets is prohibited
  • Only non-marking, closed toe athletic shoes allowed
  • Spitting, profanity and fighting are prohibited. Violators will be instructed to leave the facility
  • If assistance is needed for court set-up and/or equipment, please contact the student Facility Supervisor on duty or a Campus Recreation professional staff member
  • While full court games are in progress, spectators may not shoot at either basket
  • Hats are not allowed on the courts while participating in activity

Racquetball and Tennis Courts SOP

  • Please refrain from marking the racquetball/squash court walls with shoes or rackets
  • Racquetball and tennis court reservations can be made for the same day or the following day; no reservations will be taken more than a day in advance. Reserve a court online
  • Reservations are one hour in length and are made on the hour
  • Limit one reservation per person, per day
  • Please leave the court promptly at the conclusion of your reservation time
  • Reservation is lost if patron is not on the court 15 minutes past the hour reserved
  • All patrons are required to wear protective eyewear in the racquetball court, which can be attained at the welcome desk.  Protective eyewear is not required on the tennis courts

Indoor Track SOPs

  • The CRC indoor track is for running and walking
  • Faster participants will keep to the outside lanes and slower participants will yield on the inside
  • Appropriate closed-toe athletic shoes required; running spikes are prohibited
  • Directional signs will specify clockwise or counter-clockwise running/walking direction based on day of the week. Participants must follow the directional sign at all times

Campus Recreation Complex Turf Field SOP

  • No alcohol or tobacco products
  • No drinks except water on turf
  • No food, gum, seeds, or nuts
  • No dogs (except guide dogs)
  • No metal spikes
  • No glass
  • No golf

Intramural Sports Public Spectators SOP

Non-UMass Lowell Spectators are allowed at UMass Lowell Intramural Sports competitions inside the CRC. Spectators are only allowed into the CRC to watch the one game they came to see and must be signed in by a participating host.

  • Spectators are not allowed to participate in activities.
  • Spectators will not be charged a guest fee as they will be expected to exit the facility immediately after the game.
  • Minor spectators are allowed during intramural competitions only when accompanied by a parent or guardian; parents and guardians are required to complete a minor liability release form for each child under 18 years of age, for each visit.

Free Wheelers Bike Share SOP

  • UMass Lowell students, faculty, and staff can check out a Free Wheeler for free at any of our Free Wheeler stations after they register.
  • If a bike is returned after the designated time, a $20 late fee will be charged, and the participant will not be able to check out another Free Wheeler until the late fee is paid.
  • If a bike is lost or stolen, the participant is responsible for paying for its replacement. Currently the fee to replace a Free Wheeler is up to $800.

Cell Phone, Photo, and Video SOP

Photography and videography are permitted in Campus Recreation facilities for personal use, with the exception of restrooms, locker room spaces, and during group fitness classes. All personal photography and videography are strictly prohibited in these spaces and classes.

Taking photos and videos must be done in a safe manner, must not interfere with Campus Recreation operations, and must not disrupt other patrons' activities.

Taking photos or videos of patrons without their consent is strictly prohibited. Campus Recreation staff reserve the right to ask any patron to cease taking photos/videos if they suspect a policy violation. Any violation is cause for immediate removal from Campus Recreation facilities and possible suspension or revocation of membership.

"For personal use" is defined as photo and video of yourself or consenting friends obtained in an informal manner. Cameras with interchangeable lenses as well as tripods are not permitted for personal use.

Appropriate Attire SOP

Appropriate attire is required in all Campus Recreation facilities, programs, and activities.

  • Upper body garments are required in all activity areas. Garments which discreetly cover the lower body are required in all areas.
  • Closed-toe, non-marking athletic-type shoes that are free of debris are required in all activity areas except for the pool or for specific programs (yoga, etc.).
  • Hats are allowed in the fitness center, on the track and all non-activity spaces. Hats are not allowed in the racquetball/squash courts or gymnasium when recreating for safety purposes.

Food and Beverages SOP

  • Food and candy is allowed in designated areas only and is not allowed in activity areas. Designated areas include: Atrium and hallways.
  • Water bottles are allowed in non-breakable, sealable containers in all areas of the CRC, Campus Rec Complex, and RFC.
  • Gum is not allowed in the CRC, Campus Rec Complex or RFC.

Miscellaneous SOP

  • No animals are allowed in the CRC, Campus Rec Complex or RFC except guide dogs.
  • Profane or indecent language will not be tolerated.
  • The use of tobacco or tobacco substitute products is not permitted on-site.
  • The possession of alcohol or recreational drugs will not be permitted in the CRC or RFC nor on its grounds.
  • Individuals under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs will not be permitted in Campus Recreation facilities nor on its grounds.
  • Spitting or intentionally creating other health hazards will not be permitted.
  • Verbal or physical altercations will not be permitted.
  • Spectators will be required to adhere to all standard operating procedures stated for Campus Recreation participants.

Bike Shop and Outdoor Center Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)

Payments

  • Credit and debit cards (that can be run as credit) only
  • No cash or checks accepted
  • We cannot accept tips

Abandoned/Unclaimed Property

Customers are responsible for picking up their bicycles, equipment, and purchases within 14 days of being notified that service is complete or purchased items have arrived at the bike shop.

After 14 days, a storage fee of $25 per week will apply.

If items remain unclaimed for more than 60 days, they will be considered abandoned property. At that point, Campus Recreation will donate, recycle, or resell the item(s) at our discretion. We will make reasonable attempts to contact customers before taking any such action, using contact information provided on the customer account; we will notify the customer at the end of the 60-day period to confirm we consider the item abandoned.

Bike Shop and Outdoor Center Terms of Service

  • Merchandise Returns: We will accept returns of merchandise and parts for up to 30 days with valid proof of purchase. The returned merchandise must be in unused condition and intact in its original package.
  • Defective Merchandise: We will accept returns or repair and replace at our option, merchandise deemed to possess a factory defect for a period of 90 days. After 90 days the customer is advised to contact the manufacturer for warranty information.
  • Exclusions: The UMass Lowell Bike Shop return policy excludes the following:
    • Labor hours charged for services.
    • Merchandise returned for re-purchase at a lower price
    • Any manufacturers return policy that supersedes our return policy
  • Special Orders: All special-order items must be paid in full before ordering, subject to up to 20% restocking fee if returned. 
  • New & Used Bike Sales
    • Used bicycles are sold as is and all sales are final
    • New bicycle purchases are final and cannot be returned
    • New and used bikes are eligible for a Free “Ride Prep” within first 90 days. 
  • What Customers Can Expect for Repairs – Customers will be given the opportunity to approve work prior to the work being done, including knowledge of reasonable estimated cost for labor, stock parts, non-refundable special-order parts as well as reasonable time estimate for work to be completed.
  • Rental Agreement
    • Customers will receive an itemized receipt for all goods and services for rentals
    • All rentals must be paid in full at time of reservation
    • Refunds will not be issued to rental reservations cancelled within 48 hours of proposed rental pickup time
    • Late fees of 2 times the daily rate will be charged for any late rentals
    • All rented equipment will be the responsibility of the rental customer
    • Rental equipment is subject to excessive cleaning and/or damage repair fees to be assessed within 72 hours after the equipment has been returned
    • Customers will be charged up to the Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for replacement of equipment that is not returned or is damaged beyond repair

Campus Recreation Release of Liability Adult (18+)

I understand that participation in UMass Lowell Campus Recreation programs or utilizing its facilities is purely voluntary. I agree, on behalf of myself, my assigns, executors, and heirs, to release and indemnify and hold harmless, the Commonwealth, the University of Massachusetts, its Trustees, officers, agents, instructors, employees, hereinafter collectively referred to as University, from and against any and all claims, liability, losses, third party claims, damages, costs, or expenses (including attorneys' fees) arising out of or resulting from claims of negligence which I, my heirs, representatives, executors, administrators, and assigns may now have, or have in the future against University on account of personal injury, property damage, death or accident of any kind arising out of or in any way related to my presence at or participation in any activity, event or program, including traveling to, training for, being instructed in using equipment for or participation in or at any UMass Lowell Campus Recreation event, program, activity or facility. I agree to be responsible for any damage to University property that occurs while in my possession.

I understand that I am releasing University from any and all claims for injuries or damages arising out of University's negligence including, but not limited to the temporary or permanent muscle strain or soreness, sprains, strains, cuts, abrasions, bruises, ligament and/or cartilage damage, fractures, spinal injuries, head injuries, eye injuries, disfigurement, paralysis, internal injuries, organ damage or death. I recognize that there are other risks of injury that may occur by my participation, which are inherent in physical activity.

I understand that I am responsible for determining whether I have any health conditions that restrict my participation in any UMass Lowell Campus Recreation event or activity. UMass Lowell may rely on my representation that I am healthy enough to participate safely. I understand that should an accident or injury occur, I hereby give my consent to necessary medical care. I acknowledge and accept that the cost of such medical care is my responsibility.

I hereby release University and the UMass Lowell Campus Recreation Department, their Trustees, officers, agents, employees and/or instructors from any and all liability for any personal injury or property damage caused by University's negligence or the negligence of any and all officers, agents, employees or members of University or the UMass Lowell Campus Recreation Department. This Release of Liability will continue in full force and effect throughout the entire term of my participation in Campus Recreation program(s) and/or activity(ies).
