Hazing Reporting and Information

Hazing Overview:

UMass Lowell has a Zero Tolerance Policy for any/all types of Hazing. If hazing is occurring, it needs to be reported. UMass Lowell encourages individuals reporting hazing to provide as much information as possible about the incident so that appropriate action can be taken to address the alleged hazing. If you require immediate assistance in an emergency, please contact UMass Lowell Police at 1-978-934-4911.

Hazing is defined as the following: Any intentional, knowing, or reckless act committed by a person against a student (regardless of that student’s willingness to participate), that:

  1. is connected with an initiation into, an affiliation with, or the maintenance of membership in, an organization (e.g., a club, athletic team, fraternity, or sorority); and
  2. causes or is likely to contribute to a substantial risk, above the reasonable risk encountered in the course of participation in the institution of higher education or the organization, of physical injury, mental harm, or degradation.

Student organizations under the Hazing policy include student groups that are not formally recognized by the institution. For the purposes of the hazing policy, a student organization is defined as an organization at the institution (such as a club, society, association, varsity or junior varsity athletic team, club sports team, fraternity, sorority, band or student government) in which two or more of the members are students are enrolled at the institution, whether or not the organization is established or recognized by the institution.

This applies to such behavior on or off campus. No student or organization shall be involved in any action which is considered hazing by this definition.

Please see Appendix A of the Hazing Policy of the Student Conduct Code for more information. Hazing is investigated as described under Procedures for Adjudicating an Alleged Violation of the Student Conduct Code.
